We've been building up our reputation everyday since 1989. Throwing it away by cutting corners simply doesn't enter the equation. The six Directors who run the business own the business.

Steph co-founded Curtis McLean with Mike – she’s still looking ahead. As she says, “I always aim to add value and provide solutions. It’s about working with clients to look at what they are doing – and what they might be doing. It’s important to ask questions about the future, then plan and structure for what’s going to happen.” Steph specialises in taxation and business services. She’s well known for being responsive to clients’ needs, willing to drop everything to help when most needed. She’s also ready to “get on the case” to make sure plans are implemented to the best effect. “I especially like working with business owners who are continually looking to create opportunities and look to me as a source of ideas and expertise.” The future? “We’ll continue developing our client relationships to deliver quality and professional advice in a friendly and accessible way.”
It is many years since Mike and Steph had the vision that led to the establishment of Curtis McLean – but the commitment and enthusiasm is every bit as strong as day one. Mike’s clients value his straight talking advice and experienced business mentoring. They also appreciate the fact he’s always ready to “shoulder the weight” for them when needed. Business and tax structuring is one of Mike’s fortes.
He has a keen interest in the role that marketing can play in business success. “I like to look for innovative solutions to problems,” he says. “Small things can make a profound difference.” Mike has always made the effort to know what’s going on in the wider business community – and often gets involved. He’s an avid supporter of Wellington rugby and sport in general; his passion for horse racing has seen him play a key role in getting the Wellington Racing Club successfully “back on track”.
“Our clients can rely on good common sense advice,” says Paul, who has been with Curtis McLean since 1994. “When they are facing an issue we ask, ‘what exactly do you want to achieve?’ and ‘what are the cost implications of this decision?’ and ‘is it worth it?’ It can be a kind of a reality check for clients sometimes.” Once the client’s latest circumstances and objectives have been identified, the right solution is usually pretty clear. Paul works with a lot of professional companies, such as IT, law and consultancy firms – he welcomes clients who are passionate about their business and are looking for solutions. As with all Curtis McLean’s Directors, he has all the necessary support to deliver results:
“I have a really good team around me here, we all love doing what we’re doing.” After hours, Paul is into water sports, including sailing – “it’s a small yacht so if you make a mistake you end up swimming.” He has also chalked up a finish in the Auckland marathon.
Stephen was one of the Curtis McLean “originals” back in 1989. With a wealth of experience, he understands the importance of a balanced approach. “Income isn’t the only thing for people to consider in making investments and business transactions or structuring,” Stephen says.
“There’s more to it than just money. It’s about identifying the decisions that are best for the client’s individual circumstances and long-term objectives.”
Stephen enjoys working closely with his clients to identify and fine-tune that balance. He specialises in accounting for property investments and transactions, and in business valuations. The challenges of the work are continually rewarding. When he’s not working, Stephen’s often busy with his young family; unless he’s relaxing over a well-deserved coffee at one of Wellington’s great cafés.
Steven has been with Curtis McLean from the beginning in 1989 so has many years of experience in Chartered Accounting and business advice. He loves the diversity of working with a wide range of clients, including a number of not-for-profit organisations: “you get to meet a lot of different people in a lot of different circumstances,” he says. “People often come to Curtis McLean with an issue because they are feeling isolated. We’re like a sounding board for them, a listening ear. It’s very satisfying to help clients with the problems or issues they are facing.” These business relationships usually have real longevity. Over time, many clients have come to see Steven as a close friend to bounce ideas off when needed. Beyond work, Steven takes on another key support role: coach for his children’s soccer team.
Jon has been a Curtis McLean director since 2005. His area of specialisation is assisting clients with property investment – both residential and commercial. This sees him helping clients to set up and structure investments, as well as helping with the ongoing compliance issues, such as tax. “I love my work. It’s a bit like putting together a jigsaw, always different,” Jon says. He values the long-term nature of relationships: “I really enjoy watching my clients’ affairs mature, as they move their business and investments forward.” Jon is highly regarded by clients for his ability to explain even complex issues in plain English – and for welcoming regular contact. “I like having people call me up to bounce ideas around and ask questions. It’s always much more effective to get things on the right track from the start.” Other passions? Golf – “though I don’t play enough!” – and overseas travel.
